A handful of kind folks at Victory Velo voluntarily subjected themselves to a rigorous 6 week training experiment at the ProActive Personal Training Studio. The project, conducted by coach Michael O’Rourke involved a carefully regimented combination of resistance training alternated with wattage based intervals on Keiser spin bikes. The goal was to increase functional threshold power, peak power, maximum power at VO2max, and maximal strength. This can’t be considered a proper scientific study, as there was no control group. However, as many variables were controlled to the greatest extent possible, right down to ambient temperature. The guys came once per week and they maintained their normal ride schedule. 

As expected, there was more than a fair amount of smack-talk and the group quickly degraded into wagering factions. More specifically, it was the “Old Guys” vs. “Young Guys” competing for the ultimate prize; pizza and beer. 

The program consisted of exactly one hour of squats, plyometric jumps, weighted step-ups, and leg curls, interspersed with specifically timed intervals on our silky smooth Keiser M3  bikes. Just for good measure, a short series of core work on the ballast balls finished things off. 

So, how did it turn out?  In this case, youth aided by buckets of naturally derived growth hormones was not enough to defeat the steely determination and iron legs of battle hardened veterans of the bike.  

 

In fact, the Masters athletes made the greatest gains overall, while the “young‘uns” gained the most in maximal strength. The results are as follows;
